Understanding Digital Lens Technology
Digital lens technology or free-form is an improved method
of lens manufacturing that utilizes five axis surfacing
equipment for superior lens production.
This new generation of surfacing equipment eliminates the
need for traditional hard lap tools while using a minimal
amount of soft tools thus decreasing the amount of "rough"
surfacing found in a traditional lens.
The polishing process utilizes an intelligent computer
controlled system that conforms to the complex changing
surfaces of the lens for enhanced optics.
Most digital lenses use either a digital mold on the front and
digital surfacing on the back or digital surfacing on both
surfaces for a design with tighter tolerances and enhanced
visual acuity.
